What's an Intuition Pump?

If you find that the average value of posts we tend to see on LinkedIn is declining, you can do something about it.
โ€‹
โ€ข Post your ๐š’ฬฒ๐š—ฬฒ๐šœฬฒ๐š’ฬฒ๐šฬฒ๐š‘ฬฒ๐šฬฒ๐šœฬฒ
โ€ข Write simply, be positive, and exercise ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ ๐ž
โ€ข Inspire ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง novel ideas and let them take flight
โ€‹
I use what I've come to call "intuition pumps" (gracias, Daniel Dennett. R.I.P.)
โ€‹
I'm a bit abusing Dennett's term here. They could also be referred to as "intuition weed wackers" or "mind machetes" since they're about learning space and letting ideas flow, but no matter.
โ€‹
Intuition pumps, as I think of them, are techniques for mining my doubts and meager knowledge to answer questions that open roads to insight. They aren't necessarily insightful in and of themselves (they can be). But devices that clear the paths in my mind through which insight may come.
โ€‹
Here are just a few examples of intuition pumps that we'll learn about in the course that starts this Friday:
โ€‹
โ€ข ๐“๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐€๐›๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐: Why has this growth trend not already run its course? "Why has X not already eaten the known universes?" or "Why does this continue?"
โ€ข ๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ž ๐‘๐‚๐€: What are some of the main causes behind the "root cause" before you arrive at the Big Bang? (RCA = Root Cause Analysis)
โ€ข ๐‡๐š๐ฐ๐ค๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‡๐š๐ง๐๐ฌ๐š๐ฐ๐ฌ: Compare 2 seemingly unrelated things to find essential points of commonality and strip down our conceptions of what is and is not.
โ€‹
I'll explain these and provide examples of how I used them to create consistently thought-provoking writing.
โ€‹
๐๐จ๐ญ๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ง๐ž: To "๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ฃ๐‘œ๐‘˜๐‘’" is to upset to prompt a response or change. That doesn't mean I want to offend anyone. It means helping readers break through (or let go of) their learned and often not-useful mental models of the word and ๐š‘ฬฒ๐š˜ฬฒ๐š ฬฒ ฬฒ๐šฬฒ๐š˜ฬฒ ฬฒ๐š•ฬฒ๐š’ฬฒ๐šŸฬฒ๐šŽฬฒ in it.
โ€‹
In yesterday's newsletter, I wrote about a return to the natural curiosity that we all have as children. "Why is the sky blue?" is a very powerful question. Let us return to that way of thinking and create a habit of PUBLISHING those ideas on a weekly or even daily basis.

Minimally Viable LinkedIn Habit The following is a sample lesson from my LinkedIn Power Tools for Cybersecurity Practitioners 30-day Bootcamp Course. If you canโ€™t think of anything profound or Earth-shattering to write today, donโ€™t. But do post something. When I lived in Denver, I went to the gym every day unless I was out of town. There were...

Newsletter for Tuesday, July 9, 2024 I believe in impostors. But I donโ€™t believe in Impostor Syndrome. Syndrome is a medical term. Look it up. I wonโ€™t deny you the pleasure of doing so.50% of those who claim to have Impostor Syndrome are impostors. That 50% figure is made up. But it doesn't matter. What matters is the questions it is intended to summon forth. It is a useful fiction. The rest (whatever the number) have forgotten how to be curious. The "forgetting" is no accident. It's central to...
